Check out these must-know travel and transportation phrases that will make getting around Japan a breeze. We personally use these phrases ourselves when we travel and we’re excited to share them with you. Hope they’ll be just as helpful to you!

Asking for Directions:

  • “Sumimasen, [place name] wa doko desu ka?” (Excuse me, where is [place name]?)
  • “Koko kara [place name] made ikura desu ka?” (How much is it to get to [place name] from here?)

Buying Tickets:

  • “Kippu o kudasai.” (One ticket, please.)
  • “Tokudane wa arimasu ka?” (Do you have any discounts?)

Navigating Train Stations:

  • “Eki wa doko desu ka?” (Where is the station?)
  • “Kono densha wa [place name] ni ikitai desu.” (I want to go to [place name] by this train.)

Asking about Departure Times:

  • “Kono densha wa nanji ni demasu ka?” (What time does this train depart?)
  • “Tsugi no densha wa nanji ni demasu ka?” (What time does the next train depart?)

Inquiring about Stops:

  • “Kono densha wa [station name] ni tomarimasu ka?” (Does this train stop at [station name]?)
